The single most valuable link in your Instagram bio isn't your website — it's your WhatsApp. Here's how to add one properly.
Method 1: Direct link in your bio (fastest)
Your Instagram bio has one clickable link. Point it straight at WhatsApp:
- Generate a WhatsApp link with our free generator using your business number and a pre-filled greeting like "Hi! I saw you on Instagram."
- Copy the URL (e.g.
https://wa.me/972541234567?text=Hi!%20I%20saw%20you%20on%20Instagram.). - In the Instagram app, tap Edit profile → Website → paste the link → Done.
- Tap your own profile. The link now appears under your bio.
When someone taps it, WhatsApp opens directly to a chat with you, message pre-filled. Zero friction.
Method 2: Instagram's built-in Contact button (professional accounts only)
If your account is set to Professional (Business or Creator), Instagram lets you add contact buttons directly:
- Edit profile → Contact options → Add a WhatsApp Business number.
- Enter your number (must be linked to WhatsApp Business).
- Save. A "WhatsApp" button appears on your profile.
This is the cleanest option because Instagram doesn't count the tap as an external link click, and the button is visible even when your bio is long.
Method 3: Multiple destinations with a link-in-bio tool
If you need more than one link (WhatsApp + Etsy + YouTube + booking site), use a link-in-bio page:
- Linktree, Beacons, Later Link-in-Bio, or a simple custom page — all support WhatsApp links as buttons.
- Your Instagram bio points to the link-in-bio page.
- The page has a "Chat on WhatsApp" button that opens
wa.me/....
The tradeoff: one extra tap versus multiple destinations. Fine for creators, wasteful for single-purpose businesses.
Pre-filled message: what to write
The pre-filled message is your first impression. Keep it:
- Short — one sentence.
- From the customer's perspective — "Hi! I saw you on Instagram..." not "Hello, thanks for reaching out."
- Specific to the source — makes it easier to track and personalize.
- Editable — some customers delete it and write their own; that's fine, don't make it necessary.
Good examples:
- "Hi! I saw your Instagram — I'd love more info on the [product/service]."
- "Hello, I found you on Instagram and I'd like to book an appointment."
- "Hey! Instagram sent me — can you share your menu?"
Track where chats come from
Add a UTM parameter so your analytics can distinguish Instagram chats from Facebook, TikTok, or website chats:
https://wa.me/972541234567?text=Hi!%20from%20Instagram%20&utm_source=instagram
The UTM sits inside the message text (WhatsApp doesn't strip it), so when you paste chats into a CRM you can see the source in the message body. Our generator has a UTM builder that handles this properly.
What NOT to do
- Don't use a shortened URL (bit.ly, tinyurl). Instagram's link checker sometimes flags them, and shorteners can be blocked in certain regions.
- Don't put your raw phone number in the bio. People have to copy it, open WhatsApp, add a contact, and start a chat. You'll lose 80% before they reach that.
- Don't skip the pre-filled message. "What do I say?" is a real reason people don't start the chat.
After you set it up
Post a Story with a "Message us" sticker linking to WhatsApp. Announce in a feed post that you're on WhatsApp now. Then measure — did chats-per-week go up? If yes, this was the highest-leverage change you'll make to your bio all year.
