When someone Googles your business and lands on your Business Profile, they want to reach you now. Adding WhatsApp shrinks that from a phone call or drive to a two-tap chat.

What Google Business supports (and doesn't)

Google Business Profile has a "Message" feature — but it uses Google's own chat, not WhatsApp. There's no official "add WhatsApp" button.

However, you can:

  1. Add WhatsApp as a website link (works everywhere).
  2. Add WhatsApp to your profile description (works, less prominent).
  3. Add a WhatsApp link to your Google Posts (each post can have a "Learn more" URL).

The workarounds are simple and effective.

Method 1: WhatsApp as your website (best)

If you don't already have a website, or your website is thin, point your Google Business "Website" field at WhatsApp:

  1. Google Business dashboardInfoWebsite.
  2. Paste your wa.me link (e.g. https://wa.me/972541234567?text=Hi!%20I%20found%20you%20on%20Google).
  3. Save.

Now the "Website" button on your profile opens WhatsApp directly. On mobile, it opens the WhatsApp app.

If you already have a website

Don't replace it. Instead:

  • Keep your website in the Website field.
  • Add the WhatsApp link elsewhere (see below).

Method 2: Google Posts

Google Posts appear on your profile for 7 days each. Every post has an optional CTA button:

  1. Add updateAdd a photo, offer, or event.
  2. Write your post ("New menu items! Chat to order.").
  3. Add a buttonLearn more → paste your wa.me link.
  4. Publish.

Post weekly with different offers, all pointing at WhatsApp. Free traffic to a conversion channel.

Method 3: Profile description

In the From the business section, mention WhatsApp:

Family-owned bakery since 2015. Order online at bakery.com or chat with us on WhatsApp: wa.me/972541234567

Google auto-links the URL. Less prominent than the Website button, but visible.

Method 4: Google Business Q&A

If customers ask "How do I contact you?" in your profile's Q&A, answer:

You can WhatsApp us at [link] or call [number]. WhatsApp usually gets the fastest response.

Every visitor who reads the Q&A now has a WhatsApp link.

Pre-filled message for Google traffic

Google searchers are high-intent. Use a message that acknowledges Google:

Hi! I found you on Google — I'd like to [ask a question / book / order].

Add UTM tracking:

https://wa.me/972541234567?text=Hi!%20from%20Google%20&utm_source=google_business

Now when a chat comes in, you know it came from your Google profile — not Facebook or your website.

Best practices

  • Test the link on both iPhone and Android. On mobile the WhatsApp app should open; on desktop, WhatsApp Web.
  • Respond within 15 minutes during business hours. Google surfaces "responds quickly" as a signal that ranks you higher in local search.
  • Match your business hours to your away message so out-of-hours chats know when to expect a reply.
  • Update the WhatsApp number if you change it — a dead wa.me link kills conversions and hurts your profile.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the Website field. The "Website" button is the most-clicked element on a Google Business Profile after directions.
  • Using the same generic pre-filled message for every source. You lose the ability to segment.
  • Not testing on mobile. Some Google apps intercept links and open them in an in-app browser, breaking WhatsApp handoff. Test on a real phone.
  • Forgetting Google Posts. These are free weekly ads to your local search audience. Use them.
