How to Backup and Restore WhatsApp Chats — iPhone + Android

Losing WhatsApp chats hurts more than losing photos. It's every conversation with your kids, every order confirmation, every note-to-self. The good news: WhatsApp gives you free, unlimited backup on both iPhone and Android — you just have to turn it on and use it correctly.

Here is exactly how to back up, how to restore, and the traps that make people lose everything anyway.

The one-minute overview

• iPhone backs up to iCloud.
• Android backs up to Google Drive.
• Backups include chats, photos, videos, and voice notes by default.
• Backups are end-to-end encrypted if you turn on the encryption option (highly recommended).
• Restoring only happens during first-time setup on a new phone.

That last point is the source of 90% of the "I lost my chats" stories. Miss the restore prompt during setup and there is no easy do-over.

iPhone: back up to iCloud

Turn on automatic backup

1. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup.
2. Tap Auto Backup and choose Daily (recommended), Weekly, or Monthly.
3. Enable Include Videos if you want them — videos triple backup size.
4. Sign into iCloud on the phone (Settings app → your name → iCloud → make sure WhatsApp is toggled ON).
5. Tap Back Up Now to run the first one.

Turn on end-to-end encryption

Same screen → End-to-end Encrypted Backup → Turn on. Set a password or a 64-digit key. Save it somewhere safe — a password manager works well.

If you lose this password, your backup is unreadable. WhatsApp cannot recover it for you.

iCloud storage tips

• Free iCloud gives you 5 GB. Most WhatsApp backups exceed this quickly. Either pay for iCloud+ (starts at $0.99/month for 50 GB) or turn off "Include Videos" to shrink the backup.
• Check backup size in Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WhatsApp.

Android: back up to Google Drive

Turn on automatic backup

1. WhatsApp → tap the three dots (top right) → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
2. Tap Back up to Google Drive and pick a frequency (Daily is best).
3. Select the Google account to back up to.
4. Choose Back up over — Wi-Fi only unless you want backups to eat mobile data.
5. Toggle Include videos on or off.
6. Tap Back Up to run the first one.

Google Drive storage tips

• Since late 2023, WhatsApp backups count against your Google Drive quota (they didn't used to). Free Drive is 15 GB shared with Gmail + Photos.
• If you're near the limit, either buy more Drive space or exclude videos.

Restoring on a new phone (same operating system)

Same iCloud/Google account = easy. Same phone type = smooth.

iPhone → iPhone

1. Set up the new iPhone with the same Apple ID used for backup.
2. Install WhatsApp from the App Store.
3. Open it and verify the same phone number.
4. When prompted, tap Restore Chat History. This can take 5–60 minutes depending on backup size.

Android → Android

1. Sign into the new phone with the same Google account.
2. Install WhatsApp from Play Store.
3. Verify the same phone number.
4. Tap Restore when prompted.

Miss the prompt and you'll have to uninstall, reinstall, and set up again to see it. That's the only way to trigger the restore flow again.

Cross-platform: iPhone ↔ Android

This is where it used to be impossible. Now it works, but only with specific tools.

Android → iPhone (Move to iOS app)

1. On the new iPhone, during setup, choose Move Data from Android.
2. Install the Move to iOS app on your Android.
3. Follow the pairing code.
4. In the list of items to transfer, select WhatsApp. On Android WhatsApp, tap Start when prompted.
5. After transfer, install WhatsApp on iPhone, verify your number, tap Start.

iPhone → Android (Move to Android)

1. Have your new Android phone and a USB-C to Lightning cable.
2. During Android setup, choose Copy apps & data → Cable.
3. Connect the two phones, unlock the iPhone, choose Trust.
4. Select WhatsApp among the items to transfer.
5. After setup, open WhatsApp on Android, verify the same number, tap Import.

This is Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and most modern Androids. Older phones without the "Copy apps & data → Cable" option can use the Samsung Smart Switch app instead.

The traps that lose people's chats

1. Verifying with a different phone number on the new phone. Backup is tied to the number. Change the number, lose the restore option. Use "Change Number" before switching devices, not after.

2. Skipping the "Restore" prompt during setup. People tap Skip to "come back to it later." There is no later — you'd have to uninstall and reinstall.

3. Different Apple ID / Google account on the new phone. Backup is tied to the cloud account. Sign in with a different one and the backup is invisible.

4. Turning on encrypted backup without saving the password. Lose the password, the backup is gone. Save it in a password manager the second you set it up.

5. Waiting a week to back up before switching phones. Do a manual Back Up Now the morning you switch, not "sometime last week."

6. Deleting WhatsApp before backing up. Uninstall wipes local chats. If your last cloud backup was 30 days ago, that's what you'll restore to.

Exporting a single chat (for records or legal purposes)

If you just need one conversation as a file:

1. Open the chat → tap the contact name at the top.
2. Scroll down → Export Chat.
3. Choose With Media or Without Media.
4. Share it to email, Drive, or Files.

You get a .txt file with the messages and attached media files. This is the format lawyers and courts accept.

What backups don't include

• Call history — never backed up.
• Broadcast lists — not restored across devices.
• WhatsApp Web sessions — you'll need to re-scan the QR after restore.

Once you're back up and running

If restoring on a new business phone, double-check your public-facing WhatsApp link still points to the same number. Same number = same WhatsApp link generator output, no changes needed. Different number = generate a new link and update your website, bio, and printed materials.
