The WhatsApp Business Catalog turns your chat into a mini-storefront. Customers browse products, tap to ask about one, and you close the sale β€” all without ever leaving WhatsApp. It's free, takes about 30 minutes to set up, and works whether you sell physical products, digital goods, or services.

What a catalog actually is

Think of it as your product menu inside WhatsApp. When someone opens your business profile, they see a "View catalog" button. Tapping it shows a scrollable gallery of your items with photos, prices, and descriptions. They can tap an item to see more, then hit "Message business" to ask about it β€” the product info is automatically included in the chat.

You can list up to 500 items, with images, prices in your currency, and links to your website if you want.

Before you start, you need

  1. WhatsApp Business app (not regular WhatsApp) β€” free on iOS or Android.
  2. A business phone number verified in WhatsApp Business.
  3. Product photos β€” square, at least 500x500px, ideally 1000x1000. White background looks the most professional.
  4. A price list ready to type in.

If you're on the WhatsApp Business API, catalogs are managed through Meta Business Manager β€” same principle, different interface.

Step-by-step setup (WhatsApp Business app)

  1. Open WhatsApp Business and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Business tools β†’ Catalog.
  3. Tap Add new item.
  4. Upload up to 10 images per product. The first image is the thumbnail.
  5. Fill in:
    • Item name β€” clear and short. "Blue Leather Wallet" beats "New arrival for men β€” check it out."
    • Price β€” in your local currency. Optional but strongly recommended.
    • Description β€” up to 300 characters. Materials, sizes, what's included.
    • Link β€” optional URL to the product page on your website.
    • Item code (SKU) β€” for your internal tracking.
  6. Tap Save. Repeat for every product.
  7. Once you have at least a few items, they appear on your business profile.

Best practices that actually move sales

  • Photos matter more than words. A great photo doubles conversion. If you can't shoot in a studio, shoot outside on a cloudy day near a white wall.
  • Price everything. Missing prices signal "expensive" and kill impulse. If you truly can't, write "From $X" or "Contact for quote."
  • Group by collection. WhatsApp lets you organize items into collections (e.g., "Winter 2026," "Best sellers"). Use them β€” nobody scrolls past 20 items.
  • Keep descriptions scannable. Bullets or short sentences. Assume mobile.
  • Update weekly. Sold out? Hide the item. New arrival? Add it. A stale catalog costs you trust.

How to actually drive traffic to your catalog

Setting up the catalog is step one. Getting people to it is the real work.

  • Link to it in your Instagram bio β€” WhatsApp Business gives you a direct catalog link once it's live.
  • Send the catalog link in every first reply β€” "Here's our full catalog: [link]. Let me know which ones catch your eye."
  • Share individual products via chat. Long-press an item β†’ Share β†’ send it to a customer. The full card appears in their chat.
  • Add a QR code and catalog link to your storefront, receipt, or packaging so offline customers can browse online.
  • Run ads with WhatsApp as the destination. Meta lets you run Facebook and Instagram ads that open your WhatsApp with a pre-filled question.

Cart and checkout (yes, it exists)

In many countries, WhatsApp now supports carts β€” customers add multiple items and send the whole order in one message. Availability depends on your country; check Business tools β†’ Cart in your app.

For payments, WhatsApp Pay is only live in a few markets (India, Brazil, Singapore). Everywhere else, you send a payment link (PayPal, Stripe, local bank transfer) inside the chat.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Uploading only phone snapshots. Bad lighting kills sales. Reshoot with natural light.
  • Copy-pasting the same description across items. Google and customers both hate it.
  • No prices. You'll get "how much?" 50 times a day and never close.
  • Overloading with 200+ items. People give up after screen 3. Curate.
  • Forgetting to update stock. Losing a sale is bad. Selling something you don't have is worse.

Beyond the basics

Once your catalog is running smoothly, you'll want to:

  • Set up automated greetings with a catalog link.
  • Add quick replies for common questions ("Do you ship?" "How long does delivery take?").
  • If you're getting more than 30–40 chats a day, consider a team inbox so multiple people can respond.

The catalog is only half the equation β€” the other half is a link that gets customers into your chat in the first place. Grab your free WhatsApp link generator, add it to your Instagram bio, print the QR on your packaging, and let the catalog do the selling.
