WhatsApp now offers three different ways to reach many people at once, and they behave very differently. Pick a Group when you needed a Channel and you'll spend your days moderating replies. Pick a Channel when you needed a Group and your audience will feel talked at. This guide explains exactly how Channels, Groups and Communities work in 2026, side by side, and which to choose for each situation β plus how to get people into whichever one you pick.
The one-sentence summary
- Channel β one-to-many broadcast. You post; followers read and react. No replies, no member list.
- Group β many-to-many chat. Up to 1,024 members who can all talk to each other.
- Community β an umbrella that links several Groups under one name with a shared announcement group.

WhatsApp Channels
Channels live in the Updates tab, next to Status. Anyone can follow a channel from a link or by searching, and they'll receive your posts like a news feed. Followers can react with emoji and vote in polls, but they can't reply, and they can't see who else follows the channel. Your phone number is hidden from followers, and their numbers are hidden from you.
Use a Channel when:
- You want to reach an unlimited audience with announcements, promotions, tips or news.
- You don't want a discussion β a restaurant posting the daily menu, a school posting notices, a brand posting launches.
- Privacy matters: followers stay anonymous to each other.
Limits: no direct conversation. If a follower wants to ask a question, they need a separate route β which is why every channel should include a click-to-chat link in its description. Create your free WhatsApp link with the message "Hi, I'm following your channel" and paste it there.
WhatsApp Groups
Groups are the classic two-way chat: everyone can post, see each other's names and numbers, and reply. Admins can restrict posting to admins only (which turns a Group into a mini broadcast for a small audience), approve new members, and set disappearing messages. The cap is 1,024 members.
Use a Group when:
- You want participation: a class, a client project, a neighbourhood, a VIP customer circle.
- The audience is small enough that members knowing each other is fine (or desirable).
- You need voice notes, replies and threads.
Limits: numbers are visible to all members, which is a privacy problem for customer-facing use. Groups also become noisy fast and need moderation. For customer marketing, a broadcast list is often the better tool β see WhatsApp groups vs broadcast lists.
WhatsApp Communities
A Community bundles multiple Groups under one banner. It comes with an announcement group where only admins post (up to 2,000 members) and any number of sub-groups members can join. Think of a school: the Community is the school, the announcement group is for the principal, and each class is a sub-group.
Use a Community when:
- You already run several related Groups and want one place to manage and announce to them.
- Different segments need their own discussion space: a gym with separate groups for yoga, weights and running.
- A membership organisation, church, cooperative, sports club or large course with cohorts.
Limits: setup takes more thought, and it still exposes member numbers within sub-groups. Communities are overkill for a single audience.
Which one for common business goals?
| Goal | Pick | Why | |---|---|---| | Daily offers to thousands of customers | Channel | Unlimited, one-way, private | | Customer support for a product | Neither β use 1:1 chat via a click-to-chat link | Support needs privacy and individual replies | | Online course with discussion | Group (one per cohort) or Community for many cohorts | Two-way, structured | | Restaurant daily menu | Channel | Followers just want to read | | Small team coordination | Group | Two-way, fast | | Event with 300 attendees | Channel for updates + a Group for networking | Broadcast plus optional discussion | | Local club with sections | Community | Announcements plus sub-groups | | Marketing to existing customers | Broadcast list or Channel | Broadcast list is private and personal; Channel scales |
Growing the audience for any of them
None of the three brings people in on its own. Each has an invite link (Channel share link, Group invite link, Community invite link) that you can:
- Put in your Instagram and TikTok bio.
- Add as a website chat button or a "Join our channel" button.
- Convert into a QR code with the WhatsApp QR code generator for posters, menus and packaging.
- Send in a reply to every new customer who messages you.
And remember that broadcasting is only half of the job. Whatever you choose, keep a direct click-to-chat link in your bio, channel description and Community description so an individual can always start a private conversation. That's where the sales happen.
Frequently asked
Can I convert a Group into a Channel? No. They're separate features. You can create a Channel and post its link in the Group.
Do Channel followers get notifications? Channels are muted by default; followers can unmute. Post consistently and give them a reason to.
Can I see who follows my Channel? You see a follower count, not a list.
Is there a Channel limit for admins? Up to 16 admins per Channel.
Can businesses use all three? Yes, with either WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business. The app doesn't restrict any of them.
Choose the format based on the direction of conversation you actually want β one-way, two-way, or many small two-way rooms under one roof β and always leave a door open for individual chats.
