How to Create a WhatsApp Group Invite Link

A group invite link lets anyone join your WhatsApp group with a single tap. It looks like chat.whatsapp.com/AbCdEf123... — and it's important to know this is not a wa.me link. Group links come from inside the group's own settings, not from a link generator.

Group links vs chat links — don't confuse them

• wa.me/15551234567 opens a one-to-one chat with a specific number. You make these yourself (for example with our free WhatsApp link tool).
• chat.whatsapp.com/... adds someone to a group. Only WhatsApp itself generates these, and only for a group you admin.

You cannot type a group link by hand or build it in a generator — WhatsApp creates the unique code. Everything below happens inside the WhatsApp app.

Step 1: Create or open your group

You must be an admin of the group to get its invite link.

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Create a new group (New chat → New group) or open an existing one you admin.

Step 2: Get the invite link

On Android:

1. Open the group, tap the group name at the top.
2. Scroll to Invite to group via link.
3. Tap it — WhatsApp shows the link.

On iPhone:

1. Open the group, tap the group name at the top.
2. Tap Invite to Group via Link.
3. The link appears with sharing options.

Step 3: Share the link

WhatsApp gives you four options right there:

• Send link via WhatsApp — to a contact or another group.
• Copy link — paste it anywhere: email, a website button, Instagram bio, or a poster.
• Share link — send through any other app.
• QR code — display or print it so people can scan to join. Great for events, classrooms, and shopfronts.

Anyone with the link can join without admin approval — unless you turn on approvals (see below).

Step 4: Require admin approval (optional but smart)

For public links, screen who joins:

1. Group settings → Group permissions (Android) or the group info screen (iPhone).
2. Turn on Approve new participants.

Now every join request waits for an admin to approve. This stops spammers and bots from flooding a widely-shared link.

Resetting the link (kick out unwanted joiners)

If your link leaks or gets spammed, reset it:

1. Go back to Invite to group via link.
2. Tap Reset link.

The old link dies instantly. Anyone already in the group stays, but no one can use the old URL to join again. Reshare the new one only with people you trust.

Group size limits in 2026

WhatsApp groups now support up to 1,024 members. For anything larger — a broadcast-style audience where members don't chat with each other — use a WhatsApp Channel instead. Channels are one-to-many broadcasts and have their own share links.

Common mistakes

• Trying to build a group link in a generator. It won't work — only the app creates chat.whatsapp.com links.
• Never resetting a public link. Once it's on the open web, spam finds it. Reset periodically or require approval.
• Making everyone an admin. Keep admin rights limited, or someone can reset your link and lock you out.
• Sharing a group link when you meant a chat link. If you want people to message you privately, that's a wa.me link — create your free WhatsApp link instead.

When to use each

• Community, class, team, or event chat? → Group invite link.
• "Message us" for support or sales? → wa.me chat link.

Both are one tap for the user. Just pick the right tool for the job — and remember the group link lives inside WhatsApp, not in any generator.
