Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours, but the leads they generate don't have to. With a WhatsApp link in your Story, a viewer can go from "that looks interesting" to "hi, is this available?" in two taps β without leaving the Instagram app first and hunting for your bio. This guide covers the link sticker, Highlights that keep the link alive permanently, and the tricks that make Story links actually get tapped.
What you need
- A WhatsApp click-to-chat link. If you don't have one yet, create your free WhatsApp link β add a pre-filled message like "Hi, I saw your Story" so you can identify where the chat came from.
- An Instagram account. The link sticker is available to all accounts, personal and business, since 2021. There's no follower minimum anymore (the old "swipe up" feature that required 10,000 followers is gone).
Step 1: Add the link sticker to a Story
- Open Instagram and swipe right (or tap the + and choose Story) to create a Story.
- Take a photo or video, or upload one from your gallery.
- Tap the sticker icon (the smiling square) at the top of the screen.
- Choose the LINK sticker.
- Paste your
wa.melink into the URL field. - Tap Customize sticker text and replace the raw URL with a clear label like "Chat on WhatsApp" or "Order now".
- Tap Done, then drag the sticker to where you want it and resize it with a pinch.
- Share the Story.
The sticker text matters. A sticker showing wa.me/1555β¦ means nothing to viewers; "Message us" or "Book a spot" tells them what happens when they tap.
Step 2: Make it obvious that the sticker is tappable
Instagram Story stickers get missed constantly. Give viewers a reason and a cue:
- Add an arrow or "tap here" text pointing at the sticker, or use the animated arrow GIF stickers.
- Say it out loud in a video Story: "tap the link to message me".
- Put the sticker in the middle-lower part of the screen, away from the top (profile bar) and the very bottom (reply bar), where taps are swallowed by the interface.
- Keep the sticker visible for the whole 15 seconds β don't animate it away.
Step 3: Save it as a Highlight
Stories vanish in 24 hours, but Highlights sit on your profile permanently β right under your bio, above your grid. This is where your WhatsApp link should live forever.
- Open your Story and tap Highlight at the bottom.
- Create a new Highlight named something action-oriented: "Chat", "Order", "Book", "Contact".
- Choose a cover image that looks like a button (a WhatsApp-green circle with a chat icon works well).
Now new visitors who land on your profile see a "Contact" Highlight and, inside it, a Story with a tappable link β a permanent second entrance to your WhatsApp, in addition to the bio link.
Tip: the link sticker stays tappable inside Highlights, so this works indefinitely.
Step 4: Pair the link with a reason to message
A Story that just says "message us" gets ignored. A Story that gives a reason gets taps:
- Limited stock: "Only 3 left β tap to reserve yours."
- Question prompt: "Not sure which size? Ask us on WhatsApp."
- Offer: "Story-only discount: message us with the code STORY10."
- Booking: "Two slots left this Saturday β tap to book."
- Behind the scenes β product: show the process, end with "want one? tap to order."
Match the pre-filled message to the Story. If the Story is about Saturday slots, the link's message should be "Hi, I'd like to book a slot on Saturday". Now the customer arrives with the request already typed, and you know exactly which Story brought them.
Using a QR code in Stories
Sometimes a link sticker isn't ideal β for example, when you're re-sharing a designed graphic, or when you want viewers to screenshot and scan later. Generate a code with the WhatsApp QR code generator, place it in a corner of the Story image, and add the text "screenshot & scan". This also works for Stories that people share to their own Stories, where your sticker won't carry over but the image will.
Tracking which Stories bring leads
Instagram shows link taps in Story insights (business and creator accounts). But taps aren't conversations. The reliable way to measure results is the pre-filled message: use a different message per Story campaign ("I saw your Saturday Story", "I'd like the STORY10 offer") and count the chats that arrive with each. No extra tools needed.
Common problems
- "I don't see the link sticker." Update Instagram. If it's still missing, log out and in again; the sticker is available to all accounts.
- The sticker shows the raw URL. You skipped the "Customize sticker text" step. Edit and add a label.
- Tapping opens a browser instead of WhatsApp. This can happen on some Android devices when the in-app browser intercepts the link. It still works β WhatsApp opens after the browser redirect. Using
https://wa.me/β¦rather thanhttps://api.whatsapp.com/β¦gives the smoothest result. - The link works but the message is empty. Your message wasn't URL-encoded. Regenerate the link with the generator instead of editing it by hand. See creating a WhatsApp link with a pre-filled message.
A simple weekly routine
- Post one Story with a WhatsApp link sticker per day you want leads.
- Give each one a reason (stock, offer, question, booking).
- Keep the best-performing one as a permanent "Contact" Highlight.
- Reply within minutes β Story leads are impulsive and cool off fast.
Stories are the closest thing Instagram has to a live storefront. A WhatsApp link turns every viewer into someone who can talk to you right now.
