How to Create a WhatsApp QR Code (Free, Step by Step)

Create a free WhatsApp QR code that opens a chat with your number when scanned. Step-by-step guide, what the code contains, print sizes, and how to test it.

A WhatsApp QR code turns a phone camera into a "message us" button. A customer points their camera at the square, taps the prompt, and WhatsApp opens a chat with your number β€” no typing, no saving a contact, no mis-dialled digits. It works on shop windows, menus, flyers, packaging, vehicles and slides. Here's how to make one for free, what's inside it, and how to make sure it actually scans.

What a WhatsApp QR code contains

There's no magic in the code. A QR code simply stores text, and a WhatsApp QR code stores a WhatsApp link:

https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20sign

When a phone scans it, it reads that URL and opens it. WhatsApp recognises wa.me links and jumps straight to the chat. That means three important things:

  • It never expires. The code is just the link; there's no server or subscription in between. As long as your number stays on WhatsApp, the code works β€” this year, next year, on a sticker that's been on your door for five years.
  • It works for anyone with a camera app. Every modern iPhone and Android phone scans QR codes natively.
  • It's the same technology as your link. If you already have a wa.me link, the QR code is just a picture of it. (Not sure which to use where? See WhatsApp link vs QR code.)

Step 1: Format your number

Use international format with no plus sign, spaces or dashes: country code, then the number without any leading zero. A UK number 07911 123456 becomes 447911123456; a US number (555) 123-4567 becomes 15551234567.

Step 2: Decide on a pre-filled message

Optional but recommended. A pre-filled first message tells you where the customer scanned and removes the awkward "what do I write?" moment. Examples:

  • Hi! I scanned the QR code on your menu.
  • Hello, I'd like to book an appointment.
  • I'm interested in the offer on your flyer.

Use different messages for different locations, and you'll know which sign or flyer brought each customer in.

Step 3: Generate the code

  1. Open the free WhatsApp QR code generator.
  2. Pick your country and enter your number.
  3. Type the pre-filled message (plain text β€” encoding is automatic).
  4. Preview the QR code and scan it with your own phone to confirm it opens the right chat.
  5. Download it as a PNG for screens and web, or SVG for print β€” SVG scales to any size without blurring.

No sign-up, no watermark, no expiry.

Step 4: Add it to your materials

Some placements that consistently perform well:

| Placement | Suggested message | Tip | |---|---|---| | Shop window or door | "Hi, I'm outside your shop" | Add opening hours next to the code | | Restaurant table or menu | "Table 4 β€” I'd like to order" | One code per table with the table number | | Product packaging | "I have a question about [product]" | Doubles as after-sales support | | Business card | "Hi [Name], we just met" | See QR on business cards | | Vehicle wrap | "I saw your van" | Make the code large β€” people scan from a distance | | Slide at an event | "I attended your talk" | Keep the code on screen for the whole Q&A |

Print size and scanning distance

A QR code needs to be big enough for the camera to resolve it. A rule of thumb: scanning distance Γ· 10 = minimum code width.

  • Business card, scanned at 15 cm β†’ at least 1.5 cm (2 cm is safer).
  • Table tent, scanned at 30 cm β†’ 3 cm.
  • Shop window, scanned at 1 m β†’ 10 cm.
  • Banner across a street, scanned at 5 m β†’ 50 cm.

Other print rules:

  • Keep a white margin (the "quiet zone") around the code, at least four modules wide.
  • Use dark on light. Black on white is safest; dark navy on cream is fine. Never light on dark, and never print over a busy photo.
  • Avoid glossy laminate that reflects light straight into the camera.
  • Shorter pre-filled messages produce simpler codes with bigger squares, which scan faster from further away.

Test before you print 500 of them

  • Scan with an iPhone and an Android phone.
  • Scan from the real distance, not from 10 cm away.
  • Scan the printed proof, not the screen β€” colours and sizes shift in print.
  • Check the chat opens your number with the correct message.

WhatsApp's built-in QR code vs a generated one

WhatsApp Business also offers its own QR code under Business tools β†’ QR code. It works, but it's tied to the app and can't be customised with a per-location message or exported as SVG. A generated wa.me QR code gives you full control over the message, the format and the design, and it works with both personal WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business.

Common questions

Can I change the message later? The message is baked into the code, so changing it means generating a new code. That's why using distinct messages per location from the start is worthwhile.

Does the customer need my number saved? No. Scanning opens the chat directly.

Can I track scans? Not directly β€” WhatsApp doesn't report scans. Using a unique pre-filled message per placement is the practical way to see where conversations come from.

Does it work on a computer? Scanning is a phone activity, but the same link works on desktop. Put the clickable link next to the code online so nobody has to scan their own screen.

Once your code is live, pair it with a website chat button so online visitors get the same one-tap experience as the customers standing in your shop.
