A WhatsApp link — often written as wa.me/PHONENUMBER — is a URL that opens a WhatsApp conversation with a specific phone number as soon as someone clicks it. No adding a contact, no copying the number, no typing "hi." One tap and the chat is open.

The anatomy of a WhatsApp link

Every WhatsApp click-to-chat link follows the same shape:

https://wa.me/{phone_number}?text={message}
  • phone_number — the recipient's number in international format, without +, spaces, dashes, or leading zeros. Israeli 054-123-4567 becomes 972541234567.
  • text (optional) — the message that will be pre-filled in the input box when the chat opens. It's URL-encoded, so "hello world" becomes hello%20world.

That's it. There's no API key, no account, no approval process. WhatsApp built this feature so businesses could plug it into any web page, email, or QR code.

What actually happens when someone clicks

  1. On a phone, the browser hands the URL to the WhatsApp app (if installed). WhatsApp opens directly to a chat with the target number, message pre-filled.
  2. On a desktop, the browser opens WhatsApp Web (if the user is logged in) or shows a QR code to scan.
  3. If WhatsApp isn't installed, WhatsApp's fallback page suggests downloading the app.

The magic is that the recipient doesn't need to be in your contacts. As long as they have a WhatsApp account tied to that number, the chat opens.

Why businesses love them

Compared to a "call us" or "email us" button, WhatsApp links are:

  • Frictionless — one tap versus dial + wait + talk, or type email + subject + body + send.
  • Personal — chat feels human, and businesses can respond on their own time.
  • Trackable with UTM — add ?utm_source=facebook and you know which campaign brought the lead.
  • Shareable — put the same link on a business card, an Instagram bio, a print flyer, or a QR code.
  • Zero cost — no WhatsApp Business API, no monthly fee, no per-message charge.

When you might want more than a link

If you're sending automated messages, bulk broadcasts, or building a customer support system, you need the WhatsApp Business API — a paid product with an approval process. The free wa.me link is for inbound conversations initiated by the customer.

For 90% of small businesses, the free link is all they need.

Getting your own link

To generate one, you need:

  1. A phone number tied to a WhatsApp (personal or Business) account.
  2. Optionally, a first message to save the visitor from typing "hi."

Use our free WhatsApp link generator — enter your country, number, and message. You get the URL plus a QR code you can print or embed.
