Click-to-WhatsApp Ads on Facebook: Setup, Cost, and What Works

How to run Facebook and Instagram ads that open a WhatsApp chat, what the average cost per chat looks like, and the creative patterns that convert.

Facebook and Instagram let you run ads with a "Send Message" button that opens WhatsApp directly. For most small businesses, this is the highest-intent lead source on paid social. Here's the playbook.

Two ways to run Click-to-WhatsApp

Option 1: Native Meta integration (best)

Requires your WhatsApp Business account be linked to your Facebook Business page. Meta then routes messages through their infrastructure.

  • Set up: Meta Business SuiteSettingsWhatsApp Accounts → link your number.
  • In Ads Manager, pick the objective EngagementMessaging appsWhatsApp.
  • The ad's CTA becomes a "Send Message" button that opens WhatsApp.

Advantages:

  • Meta tracks the click as a conversion — you see cost-per-lead in Ads Manager.
  • Works better with automatic bidding.
  • You can retarget people who chatted.

Option 2: Direct link (fallback)

If you can't or don't want to link WhatsApp to Meta, use a regular ad with a URL destination pointing at your wa.me link.

  • Ad objective: Traffic.
  • Website URL: your wa.me/... link with UTM.
  • Meta counts it as a link click, not a lead — you'll have to measure conversions manually.

Use Option 1 whenever possible.

The math: what a chat should cost

Rough benchmarks (varies wildly by country, niche, and creative):

| Niche | Cost per chat (USD) | Chat → paying customer | |---|---|---| | Local services (cleaning, repair, tutoring) | $0.50 – $3 | 20-40% | | High-ticket services (real estate, cosmetic) | $3 – $15 | 5-15% | | E-commerce (fashion, home goods) | $0.80 – $4 | 10-25% | | B2B (software, agencies) | $10 – $50 | 3-8% |

If your cost per chat × conversion rate = higher than your customer LTV, you're losing money. Kill the campaign, iterate.

Creative patterns that work

Video (best for cold audiences)

  • Under 15 seconds. Longer videos on mobile lose 60% before the ask.
  • First 3 seconds show the outcome, not the setup. "How I doubled my restaurant's takeaway orders" not "Hi, my name is..."
  • Text overlay — most people watch on mute.
  • End with a specific ask: "Chat now to check availability" beats "Learn more."

Image (best for retargeting)

  • Real photo, not stock. Customers can smell stock.
  • One clear focal point — product, person, or before/after.
  • Overlay a chat bubble with a customer question or your reply. Cues WhatsApp.
  • Big price or specific offer if you have one. "$29 kg / free delivery over $50" beats vague benefits.

Copy that converts

  • Headline: benefit + WhatsApp cue. "Free menu tasting — chat to book on WhatsApp" beats "Best pizza in town."
  • Body: 2–3 sentences max. Feature + specific outcome + soft CTA.
  • CTA button: "Send Message" (Meta will auto-set this when the destination is WhatsApp).

Pre-filled message: get this right

Every click-to-chat ad has a pre-filled message. Two rules:

  1. From the customer's perspective, not yours. "Hi! I saw your ad about [offer], I'd like more details." beats "Hello, thanks for messaging our business."
  2. Include ad context so you know why they chatted. Different ads → different pre-filled messages.

Example for a real estate agency running 3 campaigns:

  • Campaign A (Manhattan rentals): "Hi! I saw your Manhattan rental ad, can you send available units?"
  • Campaign B (Brooklyn buys): "Hi! I saw your Brooklyn buying guide, I'd like to talk about the process."
  • Campaign C (agent recruitment): "Hi! I saw your agent opportunity ad, tell me more."

Now when you open your inbox, you know instantly which ad brought which lead.

Handling the incoming flood

Click-to-WhatsApp ads work — they'll fill your inbox faster than you're used to. Prep:

  • Greeting message on WhatsApp Business that sets expectations. "Thanks for reaching out! We reply within 30 minutes during business hours (9am-8pm)."
  • Someone on the account or a chatbot for after-hours. Slow replies = wasted ad spend.
  • Labels — tag each new chat by ad source. Review weekly to see what's converting.
  • Follow-up rule: if a lead doesn't reply within 24 hours to your first message, send one polite nudge. If nothing after that, close the chat.

Common mistakes

  • Sending to a personal WhatsApp — you'll be overwhelmed and look unprofessional. Use WhatsApp Business.
  • No lead qualification — every ad chat should end with a clear next step (booking, payment, appointment). If it just becomes a Q&A, you're a free consultant.
  • Ignoring the pre-filled message — you lose 20% of clicks who open the chat, see empty input, and bounce.
  • No follow-up on cold leads — 40% of paying customers were "not now" the first chat. A polite nudge 3 days later converts them.
  • Running the same ad for months — creative fatigue kills CPM. Refresh every 2–3 weeks.

When to graduate to WhatsApp Business API

Once you're spending $500+/month on ads and getting 20+ chats/day, the free WhatsApp Business app breaks:

  • You can't have multiple agents on one number.
  • Automated workflows (booking, payment, FAQ) need a bot.
  • Reporting is a spreadsheet nightmare.

Move to WhatsApp Business API through Twilio, MessageBird, or 360dialog. Pricing is per conversation (~$0.005–$0.09) but you get: shared inbox, chatbots, CRM integration, real analytics.

Set up your WhatsApp link with UTM tracking → free generator.
