Someone sent you a WhatsApp message, then hit "Delete for everyone" before you saw it. Or you accidentally deleted a chat you needed. Or your phone crashed and 3 months of conversations are gone.
Can you recover them? Sometimes yes, sometimes no — and there's a lot of misinformation online. Here is the honest breakdown of what actually works, what sometimes works, and what never works.
Case 1: You deleted a message or chat by accident
This one is recoverable — if you have a recent backup.
The catch: WhatsApp restore only runs during first-time setup. You have to uninstall and reinstall the app, then verify your number, then choose "Restore." The restore pulls back everything up to your last backup — including the deleted messages, as long as the delete happened after the last backup.
iPhone steps
- Check your last backup date: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup. Note the date.
- If the delete happened after that date → uninstall WhatsApp.
- Reinstall from App Store.
- Verify your number.
- Tap Restore Chat History when prompted.
Android steps
- WhatsApp → three dots → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Note the last backup date.
- If the delete was after that date → uninstall WhatsApp.
- Reinstall from Play Store.
- Verify your number.
- Tap Restore when prompted.
Critical: anything you sent or received between the last backup and the restore is lost. If you delete something important at 3pm and your last backup was 3am, restoring gives you the message — but anything after 3am is gone.
Case 2: You want to read a message someone deleted "for everyone"
This is technically possible on Android, not on iPhone.
When someone sends a message then deletes it, the message arrived on your phone before the delete signal. The chat window replaces it with "This message was deleted," but the original text often still sits in your phone's notification log.
Android: notification history
- Settings → Notifications → Notification history (Android 11+).
- Toggle Use notification history on.
- Any future deleted-for-everyone message will still be visible here — because the notification fired before the delete happened.
Third-party apps like WhatsRemoved+ or WAMR do the same thing more reliably, monitoring notifications and archiving them. Free versions work; be aware they need permissions that can be misused, so stick to well-reviewed apps.
Two limits:
- You have to enable this before the message is deleted. Retroactive recovery is impossible.
- Media (photos, voice notes) is trickier — WhatsApp downloads them fresh, so if the sender deleted before you tapped, the media is gone.
iPhone: not really possible
Apple's notification system doesn't keep a history the way Android does. There's no built-in way and third-party apps can't access notifications from other apps.
The one workaround: if the message showed in your notification center or lock screen before the delete, you may still see the preview until you dismiss it. That's it.
Case 3: Phone lost, broken, or reset
Recoverable if you had cloud backup enabled.
- iPhone: iCloud backup → restore during setup of new phone (or same phone after reset).
- Android: Google Drive backup → same process.
If you never turned on cloud backup, the chats are gone. There is no service, tool, or app that can pull WhatsApp chats out of thin air — they're encrypted end-to-end and never sit on WhatsApp's servers.
Case 4: You need chats from years ago
Local backups are your friend here.
Android
Android WhatsApp keeps 7 rolling local backups in /Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Databases/ (or /Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases/ on newer versions). Files look like:
msgstore.db.crypt15— most recent backupmsgstore-2026-08-04.1.db.crypt15— yesterdaymsgstore-2026-08-03.1.db.crypt15— two days ago
To restore an older one:
- Uninstall WhatsApp.
- Rename the older file you want (e.g.,
msgstore-2026-07-30.1.db.crypt15) to justmsgstore.db.crypt15. - Reinstall WhatsApp and choose Restore. It'll use the file you renamed.
You need the encryption key from that time — usually stored under /Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Databases/ on rooted phones, or bundled into Google Drive backups.
iPhone
iOS is more locked down — no user-accessible database files. Your only options are iCloud restore or paid recovery tools (below).
Case 5: Paid recovery tools ("Dr.Fone", "Tenorshare", "iMyFone", etc.)
The honest truth about these:
- They work only in specific scenarios, mostly: iPhone with an old iTunes backup that predates the delete, or iCloud backup with a good login.
- They cannot bypass WhatsApp encryption. If your backup was encrypted (it is, if you turned on E2E encrypted backup), these tools can't read it either.
- Free trials show "found" messages but require paying $40–$70 to actually recover them. Sometimes they still fail after payment.
- Refund is a fight. Read reviews before paying.
Rough rule: if the built-in restore doesn't help you, paid tools probably won't either.
What NEVER works
Ignore anyone claiming these:
- "Recover deleted messages without backup" — not possible. WhatsApp is E2E encrypted, messages don't sit on Meta's servers.
- Websites asking for your WhatsApp login to recover messages — 100% scams, they steal your account.
- "WhatsApp secret recovery code" — no such thing exists.
- Reading someone else's deleted messages remotely — impossible without their phone.
- Root/jailbreak "hacks" — even after rooting, encryption keys are still required.
The prevention that beats all recovery
Since recovery is unreliable, backup is everything:
- Turn on daily backup right now — iCloud on iPhone, Google Drive on Android.
- Turn on end-to-end encrypted backup — but save the password in a password manager. Lose the password, lose the backup.
- Enable notification history on Android — protects you against "delete for everyone" going forward.
- Manual "Back Up Now" before switching phones — never trust yesterday's backup on switch day.

- Deleted a chat by accident after your last backup? Restore works.
- Want to see what someone deleted for everyone? Only if you had notification history enabled first, only on Android.
- Lost or broken phone? Restore from iCloud/Drive, if you had backup on.
- No backup? Chats are gone. No tool can recover them.
